Shooting farm and ranch real estate is a specialized form of landscape photography requiring quick decisions about composition and lighting with the purpose of inviting the viewer to consider a personal visit to the location. On any given shoot time is at a premium based on the agents and the photographers schedule, the lighting and time of day and the weather. The images used to list rural real estate feature salient geographic features such as creeks, rivers, tanks and ponds, improvements to the land, mountains, and valleys, and sometimes the remnants of what previous owners have left behind. Many of these images are from remote areas usually not accessible by anyone save the owners who often have not been to that part of their land. The images in this show and the accompanying book are curated from shoots done in many of the counties of the Big Country and the surrounding areas. Each of these was originally taken because, either I was attracted to a particular scene, or often because a particular scene called out to me for consideration. That sounds strange but having traveled these parts over the past four years I have learned what to look for as well as to shoot multiple versions of certain scenes. Oftentimes it is the last image taken in a series that is used; small variations in angle and framing can make the difference between good and best.
